The Minister of Thai Health, Somsak Thepsuthin, recently revealed that the country recorded 65,880 new cases of Covid-19 infection in one week, which was between 25 and 31 May. From the report, there were three deaths reported related to the virus. Meanwhile, the highest infection was recorded in the age group 30-39 years, followed by the age group 20-29 years and age groups over 60 years.
Data shows that young people and young adults, especially people aged between 20 and 39 years, are the most vulnerable groups to COVID-19 infections. In more specific numbers, the age group 30-39 years recorded 12,403 cases, while the group 20-29 years recorded 10,368 cases. The age group 60 years and over is also significant, with 9,590 cases.
In situations that are getting better, but high cases remain a concern. Somsak reminded the public, especially those who have underlying health conditions, to maintain vigilance. He emphasized that the importance of the use of mask and routine hand hygiene. “The level of weekly infection is still high,” he said, as quoted by The Nation on Wednesday (4/6).
Concerns over the surge of this case arise because the authorities estimate that the Covid-19 is likely to continue throughout the rainy season. “Tens of thousands of new cases every week might make people worry, but I want to convince everyone that the Ministry of Health is ready,” said Somsak. He added that the general hospital had been equipped with drugs, facilities, and medical staff that were sufficient to pursue the surge in cases that might occur.
Various steps have been taken by the government to overcome this situation, including providing information and support for people in vulnerable groups. In this case, vaccination also continues to be pursued for all age groups, especially older groups and those who have accompanying diseases.
Thai residents were also asked not to be careless in implementing a predetermined health protocol, although the number of cases began to show a decline. Extra attention is recommended for those in the region with a high level of infection.
The Thai government has made various policies to increase awareness of the importance of recording the Covid-19 case and its impact on public health. Through social media and public campaigns, they invite the public to jointly maintain their health and follow preventive steps.
The surge in this case shows that although some countries have decreased infection rates, Thailand must still be vigilant and proactively dealing with this problem. With various steps taken by the government, it is hoped that this situation can be minimized and the community can return to their activities safely.
Somsak also stated that careful preparation will show the resilience of the public health system. It is hoped that all elements of society can work together to reduce the impact of Covid-19 and towards better recovery in the future. As part of an ongoing effort, the community is reminded to maintain the health protocol and obtain the latest information about the development of the Covid-19 situation in Thailand.
