Mandatory Bathing Intentions (Men & Women)

The intention to take a mandatory bath is the main pillar that differentiates between ordinary bathing and worship. The intention can be carried out in the heart as soon as the water first touches any part of the body.

Even though pronouncing one’s intentions is not mandatory, it is circumcised to help realize the intentions in one’s heart.

Apart from intention, another mandatory pillar of bathing is spreading water all over the outside. If these two pillars are not fulfilled, then the bath is invalid.

According to the explanation from the Office of the Mufti of the Federal Territory, this intention should be carried out at the same time as the first washing of the body parts.

Here we share the recitation of mandatory bathing intentions for men and women, the legal procedures for obligatory bathing as well as further explanation regarding the law and its requirements.

Summary of Mandatory Bathing & Statement of Intent

Obligatory bathing is only valid if you fulfill it two main pillars following:

  1. Meaning: Performed internally as soon as the water first touches any part of the body.
    • The most concise pronunciation of the intention to bathe is: “I only raised big hadas because of Allah Ta’ala.”
  2. Water Leveling: Absolutely ensure that the water reaches all external parts (skin, hair and nails) without any obstacles.

Meaning of Mandatory Bathing

Obligatory bathing is a bath that is mandatory for every Muslim to remove major hadas such as after sexual intercourse, ejaculation, menstruation or postpartum.

This bath guarantees that a person is in a holy and valid state when carrying out worship such as prayer and surrounding it.

The definition of bathing according to the language is flowing water throughout the body. From a sharia point of view, it means flowing water throughout the body with a specific intention.

Allah SWT orders His servants to perform the obligatory bath for those who have large hadas before performing several acts of worship such as prayer, going around, holding a copy of the Koran, doing Itikaf in the mosque and the like.

Word of Allah SWT:

O you who believe, do not pray while drunk until you know what you are saying, and do not be unclean except when passing by until you have finished bathing.

It means: O you who believe, do not pray while drunk, until you are sober and know what you are saying. And do not (approach the mosque) in a state of junub (having high hadas) – unless you want to pass – until you have bathed to purify yourself.

Pillar of Mandatory Bathing

Based on sharia guidelines, obligatory bathing is only considered valid if it fulfills these two main pillars. That is:

1. Intention

The intention is to differentiate between normal bathing (cleaning oneself) and worship (lifting hadas).

  • Time of Intention: The intention should be in the heart at the exact moment the water starts touching any part of the body (skin or hair).
  • Pronunciation: Can be done in any language in your heart, for example: “I only raise big hadas because of Allah Ta’ala.” Pronunciation of intentions is not mandatory but circumcision is.

2. Evenly distribute the water throughout the external organs

The water must reach all surfaces of the skin, nails and hair without any obstacles. If any part does not touch the water, then the obligatory bath becomes invalid.

The following mandatory bathing steps are mandatory bathing procedures based on the sunnah and adab recommended in Islam.

  1. Face your body towards the Qibla.
  2. Then wash both hands three times.

Frequently Asked Questions about Mandatory Bathing

Is it necessary to express your intentions when bathing?

No need to say it. Just have the intention in your heart when you first wash your body parts. Words of intention are just circumcisions to help convey intentions.

Can mandatory bathing be done with a shower?

Yes, bathing must be done as long as the water is clean and reaches all parts of the body, including the head and hair.

Need to scrub or comb your body and hair?

Not mandatory. Just make sure it’s water evenly throughout the body and hair. If any parts are missing, wash them again.

Is it obligatory to perform ablution before taking a bath?

Just circumcise. Performing ablution before bathing is not mandatory, but can help perfect purity before spreading the water over the body.

When should you take a shower?

The intention is carried out in the heart when the washing first touches a part of the body, before spreading the water throughout the body.

What is the law if the obligatory bath is not complete?

If one of the pillars of obligatory bathing (intention + leveling the water) is not fulfilled, bathing is considered invalid and worship such as prayer or circumambulation invalid until the bath is perfect.

Is it necessary to perform ablution again for prayer after the obligatory bath?

If you do not do things that invalidate ablution (such as touching your genitals without a sanitary napkin or defecating) during or after bathing, then you do not need to perform ablution again for prayer. Because, bathing must remove large and small hadas at the same time.

What if there is nail polish or paint on your nails?

Mandatory bathing is invalid if there is a substance that prevents water from reaching the outside (skin and nails). Nail polish stains or non-waterproof glue/paint should be removed completely before showering.
