Meaning of Mandatory Bathing

Obligatory bathing is a bath that is mandatory for every Muslim to remove major hadas such as after sexual intercourse, ejaculation, menstruation or postpartum.

This bath guarantees that a person is in a holy and valid state when carrying out worship such as prayer and surrounding it.

The definition of bathing according to the language is flowing water throughout the body. From a sharia point of view, it means flowing water throughout the body with a specific intention.

Allah SWT orders His servants to perform the obligatory bath for those who have large hadas before performing several acts of worship such as prayer, going around, holding a copy of the Koran, doing Itikaf in the mosque and the like.

Word of Allah SWT:

O you who believe, do not pray while drunk until you know what you are saying, and do not be unclean except when passing by until you have finished bathing.

It means: O you who believe, do not pray while drunk, until you are sober and know what you are saying. And do not (approach the mosque) in a state of junub (having high hadas) – unless you want to pass – until you have bathed to purify yourself.

This is the most commonly used intention and applies to all types of major hadas.

• Arabic Text: I intend to dedicate this greatest event to God Almighty.
• Lafaz Rumi: Nawaitu raf’al hadathil akbari lillahi ta’ala
• Meaning: “I only raised big hadas because of Allah Ta’ala.”

1. Intention

The intention is to differentiate between normal bathing (cleaning oneself) and worship (lifting hadas).

• Time of Intention: The intention should be in the heart at the exact moment the water starts touching any part of the body (skin or hair).

• Pronunciation: Can be done in any language in your heart, for example: “I only raise big hadas because of Allah Ta’ala.” Pronunciation of intentions is not mandatory but circumcision is.

2. Evenly distribute the water throughout the external organs

The water must reach all surfaces of the skin, nails and hair without any obstacles. If any part does not touch the water, then the obligatory bath becomes invalid.

Mandatory Bathing Procedures

The following mandatory bathing steps are mandatory bathing procedures based on the sunnah and adab recommended in Islam.

1. Face your body towards the Qibla.
2. Then wash both hands three times.
3. Next, step on means washing the genitals, removing dirt and things that can prevent water from reaching our skin.
4. Perform ablution with intention; I only performed ablution for the obligatory bath, circumcision for Allah Taala.
5. Read Basmallah and intend it while pouring water all over your body.
6. Make sure you spread the water all over your body, including between your fingers, toes, hairline, beard, earlobes, nostrils, navel, and anus. Tied hair must be released. If the water does not touch any part of the body then bathing is still considered invalid.

• Meaning: “I bear witness that there is no God but God Almighty, there is no partner for Him, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and messenger.”
